No injuries in Merriam house fire
(March 1, 2017) Just after midnight crews from Overland Park and Consolidated Fire Dist. 2 of Johnson County responded to a house fire call in the 8400 block of W.55th Street. First units on the scene reported smoke showing from a two-story, single family home. The resident was reported out of the home safely.
Firefighters went to work attacking fires in the garage and attic area, while additional crews searched the home to be sure it was unoccupied. The garage fire was quickly extinguished, but the attic fire proved stubborn. Crews worked for over an hour extinguishing fires in tight void spaces within the attic and roof structure.
No injuries are reported. The resident said she was awakened by alarms sounding. She reports having working smoke and CO alarms and a home alarm system. She credits alarms with alerting her to the fire.
The home suffered significant fire and smoke damage and will be uninhabitable. The resident will stay with a friend.
