The Overland Park Fire Department has issued a burn ban due to dry conditions. The ban is in effect until further notice.
Over the past several days, firefighters have battled grass fires along U.S. 69. Both may have begun due to improperly discarded cigarettes.
The city is suspending issuance of all burn permits and prohibiting recreational fires, including fire pits.
The ban does not prohibit the use of outdoor grills. However, those who grill should constantly monitor the fire to be sure it does not spread to dry grass or brush due to embers. Further, have a way to extinguish a fire.
