No human injuries in two-alarm Overland Park apartment fire

(February 5, 2016) Just after 11 a.m. crews from Overland Park and Leawood Fire Departments were called to a building fire in the 11800 block of Perry Street at the Highland Ridge Apartments.

First units on the scene reported heavy smoke and fire from a two-story apartment building. Residents were being evacuated. Firefighters went to work completing evacuations and extinguishing fire in first and second story apartments. The fire had also spread to the attic of the building. Crews were able to stop the spread and bring the fire under control in about an hour. Fire damage was contained to the center portion of the building.

In all eight units of the twelve unit building were affected. Two units sustained heavy fire damage and six additional units sustained significant smoke damage. The four remaining units were saved. No injuries are reported to residents or firefighters. One dog was rescued, but unfortunately, another dog was found deceased in the building.

Apartment management and the Red Cross are working to assist the affected residents. Fire investigators believe the fire started inside a first floor apartment and spread from there, however the exact cause is under investigation.
