Overland Park, KS - It's the oldest of Overland Park's six outdoor city pool, and its final days are quickly approaching.

Roe Pool is having a community "bon voyage celebration" from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1.

Admission to the pool will be free from 4-7 p.m. on Aug. 1. Other celebration activities include a photo booth, Wiener Wagon, a DJ and more. Food for sale includes hot dogs, Frankenburger, BLT, spicy Italian sausage, carrot dog and more.

Roe Pool, 10400 Roe, opened in 1969, the same summer when NASA astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon and the Kansas City Royals launched their first season of play.

The pool will permanently close following its last day of operation, Sunday, Aug. 9.

Demolition of the pool is set to begin the week of Aug. 17.

Roe Park, including the parking lot, will be closed to the public after Labor Day weekend, Sept. 7. The Indian Creek Bike/Hike trail will remain open.

New park amenities will replace Roe Pool and include an active playground with climbing features, spinners, slides, stepping pods, a boogie board and swings. There will be separate play areas for 2-5 year olds and 5-12 year olds.

Other features include a nature play area and a wet play area with 14 aquatic features. The parking lot will be expanded, and improvements will be made to the restrooms and picnic site.

The new park features should be ready for use by late spring of 2016.
