Anyone in possession of fireworks is subject to a ticket. Therefore, do not purchase, possess or light any fireworks in Overland Park.
"During a six-day period last year, Overland Park officers responded to a total of 146 calls regarding fireworks complaints and issued 44 citations to people who violated the ordinance banning illegal fireworks," said Police Chief Frank Donchez. "The potential for injuries or fires is a great concern to the Police Department, and because of the danger, we will continue to enforce the sale, possession and discharge of illegal fireworks."
Children and adults also need to know that any person receiving a ticket is subject to a fine ranging from $200 to $500.
"If you or your child shoot off fireworks and it causes a fire, a homeowner's insurance company may sue for damages," said Fire Chief Bryan Dehner. "It has happened in Overland Park. Because fireworks are illegal, insurance companies can and will recover damages. Therefore, don't buy your neighbor's house."
Rather than risk injury and property damage, attend this year's Fourth of July Star Spangled Spectacular in Corporate Woods. This popular event, seen by thousands, is sponsored by the city of Overland Park, Corporate Woods and the Overland Park Rotary Club.
Activities begin at 4 p.m. with the free fireworks show to begin about 9:40 p.m. at Founders' Park. (Rain date is Sunday, July 5.)
There will be musical entertainment and more for the family. Bring a blanket or chair and leave your cares at home. Food and drink vendors can meet your family's needs.
