Overland Park, KS - It seems February is the month of major snowstorms.

A repeat of the 2013 snowstorms may be playing out again this year.

Current forecasts are calling for as much as 10 inches of snow beginning early Tuesday morning and ending Wednesday morning.

The snow will be accompanied by windy conditions with gusts up to 30 mph overnight Tuesday, which may limit visibility and cause snow to drift back onto streets previously plowed. The rate of snowfall may be as much as one inch per hour beginning late Tuesday morning into the evening. Everyone is asked to plan ahead.

Just like last year, the storm will create challenges for those traveling, particularly Tuesday afternoon and evening, into Wednesday.

The Feb. 21, 2013 storm, which began in the morning, forced many people to abandon their cars on streets throughout the metropolitan area, hampering efforts to plow streets and requiring additional public safety personnel to respond to calls.

"I want to encourage everyone to constantly monitor weather forecasts and make appropriate plans," said Mayor Carl Gerlach.

Priorities for snowplow drivers are thoroughfares and collector streets (collectors are the extra wide two-lane roadways). Keeping those streets passable during the storm will be the main focus. Once priorities are plowed and treated, crews will move into neighborhoods.

You can follow the progress of Overland Park snowplows, as well as checkout road conditions by viewing the many traffic cameras, on the city's website.

Preliminary weather forecasts for the weekend indicate another possible snowstorm may arrive. Just like 2013, two February 2014 snowstorms within a week may occur.
